IN THE PAST YEAR, I’ve become a huge fan of Texas wines. The taste of fermented grapes is just more appealing when you can buy a bottle that is made from the very vineyard you’re visiting. Fortunately, the Texas Hill Country—the epicenter of our state’s wine scene—is easily one of the most beautiful areas around to visit. Rugged hills, vineyards of grandeur, and exceptional sunsets all make for a delightful road-trip escape—and high-quality vino is the berry on top. by Geneva Diaz for Houstonia Magazine

Read MoreI had a blast in the Texas hill country last week on a press trip to Stonewall Motor Lodge (which I organized as SML’s publicist). This drive-up motor lodge is reminiscent of old-fashioned Route 66 accommodations. It’s smack-dab in the middle of the famous Hwy 290 wine trail between Fredericksburg and Johnson City and is within a fifteen minute drive of over fifty wineries and distilleries.
Read MoreI’ve been visiting the Texas Hill Country for almost 20 years now1 and a LOT has changed. Generally speaking, The Texas Hill Country encompasses a big area – it is Texas after all! But in this case, I’m generally talking about the 30 mile stretch along Highway 290 between Johnson City, TX and Fredericksburg, TX.2 This stretch is in the heart of Texas wine country and is ground-zero for a lot of the tourist-based activities for the industry. Definitely where you want to go for a first visit. I’ve seen the area go from a handful of wineries, some of which pushed sweet, thin, or otherwise unmemorable wine-ish, to what it is today with winemakers who are proud to produce what grows well in Texas.
